PM: 99% of Electricity Access in Villages Has Been Solved

PHNOM PENH: Prime Minister Hun Sen has said that Cambodia has solved 99% of electricity problems in villages, leaving only 1% of remote villages left without electricity.

Speaking at the graduation ceremony for students of the National Technical Training Institute in Phnom Penh on Monday morning, 27 February 2023, the Prime Minister said, "We have solved 99% of electricity access, the villages that have not yet received electricity are newly created in remote areas. Sometimes a village will have five houses there, but they still know how to use solar panels and batteries for electricity."

The Prime Minister stated that the stage of using oil lamps and burning fires has now passed and houses in villages, communes and districts across Cambodia are connected to the national electrical grid or have access to solar energy.

"A developed country is like this," he said.

In order to contribute to poverty reduction and harmonization of rural livelihoods, the Royal Government has promoted the development of rural electrification by setting two strategic goals: 1) by 2020, all villages in Cambodia will have access to electricity; 2) by 2030, at least 90% of all households in Cambodia will have access to electricity from the national grid.
